Bamberger Mahr’s Brau Bock Bier
Brauerei Mahr, Bamberg, Germany
www.mahrs-braeu.deMahr’s Brau Bock Bier falls into the class of what can be found under the names of blonde, helles or maibock beers that are golden, not amber, colored. These lager beers tend to be a bit sweeter and maltier than their darker cousins.
The golden, slightly hazy pour produced strong malt, grain and faint hop aromas along with a white head that disappeared rather quickly. It was medium carbonated, leaving a nice, thick mouthfeel that was not cloying at all.
The flavor was a pleasant caramel-vanilla maltiness, with faint herbal, not citrusy, hops and little bitterness. The 6-percent alcohol content was noticeable, but not overpowering.
But there was a faint hint of “old” in this sample – not quite musty, but enough to give me the impression that this beer had either been sitting on the shelf for a while or had not traveled well, i.e., been exposed to temperature extremes during shipping and warehouse storage.
