It was just one of those days. Time to drink to forget your blues. We have some great music this session from Chris Thomas King live on Beale St, Omar and the Howlers and some Tab Benoit. Listen in as we do a mini rants on actors and earth week, the state of health care and gubment run health care. Discussion of world wide rice shortages and our “final solution” to help that situation out… hint, it has something to do with buttweiser. We even do some barbeque discussion - winter must be over!
Beers we sampled on this show…
- Brouwerij Bosteels Tripel Karmeliet (8.0% ABV)
- Avery Brewing Company The Reverend (10.0% ABV)
- Avery Brewing Company Samael Oak Aged English Strong Ale (14.5 ABV)
- Terrapin Big Hoppy Monster (8.0% ABV) brewed in Frederick, MD (not Delaware!)
Troubled? Got the blues? Crack a beer and forget about it here.
From the land of Flying Dogs comes our beers this show. We get all up into a Flying Dog Double Dog Pale Ale and a Gonzo Imperial Porter. Plus a lot of bitching about hop prices. Interviews with Eric, the head brewdude from Flying Dog, and Rick does an interview with Jim Fixari discussing the beer food pairings at the KROC dinner .
What is this whole craft beer thing about anyway? In this show we take a giant step backwards and reintroduce ourselves and our show to some of the new listeners that have been cropping up. In this show you will learn about:
Okay, we don’t have a theme for the beers this time, except they are all big high alcohol beverages. Several of them are Brewers reserves. Yum.
We have a little beer on this show, in every sense of the word. Little guy on the Urthel label, and little guys in the studio. We are joined by the Beer Elves who help us sample some great beers (and one suck one) from Urthel. Beer Haiku, Beer News, and the usual madness, plus a few words on the late, sorta great, Ike Turner.
We get our trappist on with beers from Koningshoeven, a fantastic brewery out of the Netherlands. And, of course, we go down the religion road and offend many people, including the handicapped, suggest Jesus was a homebrewer, etc. We get our blues school on with King Bee, a song sang by many blues artists including England’s newest hitmakers, the Rolling Stones. And lest we forget, Beer Haiku, Beer News and all the usual suspects.
We take on the spirit of the Holidays and the lord of the damned. You figure out which is which. Beer News, a double shot of Beer Haiku, some Memphis Music, and the Gilligan Death Watch continues! Plus yet another nomination for Sexiest Beer Alive from our good friends at Should I Drink That. And a journey into beer cocktails, which has it’s ups and downs…
Welcome to a special Big Foamy Head show. We take a trip to downtown Memphis to see one of the legends of blues and the chitlin circuit, Bobby Rush. He put on a show in a very tiny venue. Too bad for him, that made it easy for us to get at him. Enjoy some real down home blues and the closest thing to Memphis you’re going to get unless you get off your ass and come visit us.
Sexy Beers? Yep. We launch our crusade to find the sexiest beers alive. If People magazine can do it, why not us? We are joined by friend of show Phil, host of My Life As A Foodie who brings his soft core porn nomination to the table. We have the ever popular Beer News with some up to the minute hot off the press news. As a matter of fact, we report from the future… Tune in to find out how.
We play a game in this episode called Beer Scavenger Hunt. Simple rules, go find a beer made of beer. Duh. We do come back with some nice beers and some nice tunes from Joe Bonamassa, Allman Bros. and more. We take a turn for the educational, much to Martin’s dismay, and discuss the burning question: what is a Jelly Roll? Beer Haiku, Beer News and a new segment called Errata and Corrections! Listen up…
Rick is on the road to points northwest, and Dick, Mike and Martin talk about beers brought back from the road, New Orleans specifically. We also get into a deep discussion about Tina Louise, and whether she’s dead or not. Add to the mix some quality beer news and how the big beer world is going straight to hell in a handbasket. Lots of great music and great beers, so listen up!
We clean out the refrigerators once again, sampling some beers from recent trips to Denver, California and elsewhere. We kick off the show with a review of a commercial offering from AB, and believe it or not we don’t kill it. Martin joins the ranks of home brewers in a most economical way, and we get back to our roots of beer, blues and barbecue with some cool tunes from Otis Spann and others. And Beer News returns!
We kick the alcohol level up a few notches with these high octane beers from Avery Brewing Co. The featured beers in this show are all named after the Devil, and cover three hellishly good, but distinct, styles: Grand Cru, Oaked Ale and Imperial Stout. We also do the absolutely worst telling of a ghost story you have ever heard. This and some post-Halloween music make this a damned fine show.
This is our entry into the mass of GABF shows that have been out lately, but with a twist. We had a special dinner with some of the top brewers at a restaurant in Boulder the night before the Great American Beer Festival. We spent quality time with Sam Calagione from Dogfish Head, Rob Todd from Allagash, and Adam Avery from Avery Brewing and enjoyed a fantastic menu pairing their beers and some from Russian River and Port Brewing with a variety of foods. A great night and we are glad to share it with you. Enjoy!
Things go downhill rapidly in this installment of Big Foamy Head despite Christy participating. Travel beers from my recent outing to Los Angeles and Denver are whats on tap tonight - Stone XI Anniversary Ale and Stone Vertical Epic 070707. Plus we indulge in a special release from Lagunitas Brewing, Kill Ugly Radio. And there is a lot of bitching about the beers we DID NOT get to drink because of airport inspection nazis who confiscated the beer. Pirate haiku, GABF preparations and more. Take a listen!
Continuing down the Belgian path, but we get off course and wind up in Jerusaleum by way of New York. Ponder on that while you listen to this show that covers the special nuances of great beers from New Belgium, Chimay, Achouffe, Unibroue and Schmaltz. We also talk about a new cultural phenomenon I completely missed - the game of cornhole. What? Rick shares some Beer Haiku from our friend Captain Hops at beerhaikudaily.com, and some great tunes from Jimmy Thackery, Lonnie Brooks and our old friend Joe Galea with his new CD. Le’chayim!
We shed our ideas of beer styles and classes on this installment of Big Foamy Head. We have some fine beverages from Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales, a couple from Andelot, and an old favorite from Trader Joes that you really cannot put into a category. We are joined by Clare, Dave and Terry from down the street, as well as Mike from the hood, and Rick phoning in with some beers from Avery and other fine brewers. Its a mixed bag of a show with some puckery beers, some peppery beers, and more. Add in some unique pairings musically (think Dimebag Dave and David Allen Coe) and you have quite the classless show. So listen up or there will be now bowliken for you…
